Joy in the Academic Advising Awards

Friday, January 26, the university held its annual Undergraduate Academic Advising Awards ceremony.

Since 2002, the Undergraduate Academic Advising Awards have recognized the accomplishments and commitment of those dedicated to helping students succeed through academic advising. Since the establishment of the original award, three more have been added to acknowledge those distinguished professionals whose advising responsibilities may not be their only role with the university. One of those Awards is the New Faculty Advisor Award.

This year, Dr. Joy Morgan Fleming was named the recipient of the NC State University New Faculty Advisor Award (Pictured Below)

Dr. Fleming is a relatively new faculty member — she was made assistant professor in 2016 — but has deep roots at CALS. She earned her bachelors, masters and doctorate here in agricultural education, then returned to teach. Now she is an Assistant Professor of Agricultural and Extension Education in the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences.

She was also a 2014-2016 participant in the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Leadership Development Program and is currently serving on the leadership team and hopes to continue to strengthen the nationally recognized program.

Joy has also been recognized for leading a Teaching Diverse Learners class in early 2017. It sought to develop creativity and flexibility in future agriculture teachers who must accommodate students with a variety of needs in a single classroom.

CALS Dean Richard Linton, who visited one of Dr. Fleming’s classes in 2016, had this to say about Dr. Fleming’s work:

“Joy changes people’s lives … and you can see that impact in their faces immediately…This is a great example of how much our college cares about the people of North Carolina … I was both proud and inspired by her work.”
