CALS Town Hall Discussion: Coping with the Challenges of Injustice

Three students on campus.

As we struggle to understand the unspeakable brutality that continues to exist in our communities, it is critical for us to acknowledge the pain felt by so many. CALS does not take this for granted. We understand, not all are okay.

All of us can affect positive change through understanding and compassion, and by condemning racism, hatred and violence. Engaging in honest conversation can open hearts to meaningful change that can eradicate assumptions and beliefs that feed the cancer of racism. In the words of civil rights attorney, Bryan Stevenson, to make a difference we must become proximate, change the narrative, stay hopeful, and learn to be uncomfortable.

On June 9, 2020, at 9 a.m. CALS will pause to ask an uncomfortable question: Have we really engaged on an individual and family level, a thoughtful, inclusive, and open minded discussion about race, about the challenges our history presents and about suffering and grievances so many in our community feel or experience every day. Our experiences may differ from another; however, we must concern ourselves with the impact of experiences on individuals. Do we acknowledge that the experiences, concerns, and fears are valid? These are crucial conversations and sometimes they will be uncomfortable.

How do we support each other?

It is okay to say… I do not know what to say. It is also okay to ask questions. If we are unwilling to ask questions that may seem clear to one, yet confusing to another, then we are unwilling to ensure that others can air their thoughts and gain insight.

The space we create on June 9 is one where assumptions and judgement are put aside, however hard that may be. It is about developing empathy and understanding.
