On April 30, the 2024 winners, their supervisors, guests and others in the CALS community gathered at the JC Raulston Arboretum to recognize the recipients’ exceptional dedication and far-reaching impact on the college, university and the state of North Carolina.

“The purpose of these award programs is to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of our employees that touch not only campus but every county in the state of North Carolina,” said Dean Garey Fox during the luncheon’s opening remarks. “These employees contribute significantly to the advancement of our departments, college and university, and absolutely deserve our thanks and recognition.”

CALS Awards for Excellence

NC State’s Awards for Excellence is the most prestigious honor bestowed upon non-faculty employees. This award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of individual employees, above and beyond their normal job responsibilities.

The Awards for Excellence encompasses seven categories. The following 2024 college-level winners were selected this year in CALS from a record number of nominations:

CALS Excellence in Safety Awards

The CALS Excellence in Safety Award is presented each year to two CALS employees who go the extra mile to promote safety through their actions and encourage excellence in safety for their work environment. The 2024 CALS Excellence in Safety Award winners are:

  • Robert Price (NC Food Innovation Lab): Robert’s revamp of the food safety plan, development of training modules, and commitment to rigorous inspections ensure compliance with FDA regulations. His initiative in improving laboratory safety procedures and dedication to meticulous planning were critical for securing USDA approval on a key project.
  • Patricia Routh (Animal Science): With 30+ years at NC State, Patty leads safety training for students and personnel in labs and with animal handling. Her proactive approach includes orientations, guest lectures, and thorough safety reviews for new projects. She also spearheaded the installation of specialized laundry equipment to enhance overall safety and hygiene.

Celebrating a Culture of Recognition

The awards luncheon highlighted the transformative power of recognizing exceptional work. Dean Fox encouraged everyone in CALS to continue supporting and appreciating their colleagues, building a culture where support and appreciation are the norm.

“Beyond the accolades and recognition highlighted today lies a deeper significance,” stated Fox. “It’s a reminder that when we celebrate each other’s successes, we unlock motivation, drive, and the potential for even greater achievements.”

Note of Appreciation and Dean’s Charge

The efforts of those who made this celebration possible were also recognized during the luncheon, including those who nominated the recipients for their outstanding achievements as well as each of the award committees. A special thanks went to Carolyn Young, department head for Entomology and Plant Pathology, for her extraordinary efforts in leading the Awards for Excellence committee and to Frank Louws, department head for Horticultural Science, for his leadership of the Safety Awards committee.

Dean Fox wrapped up the celebration with a charge to everyone in the CALS community. “I challenge you to help us continue to cultivate a culture of recognition and appreciation, where every individual’s contributions are valued and celebrated. If we can accomplish this, then we will be truly disrupting for good!”
