Croatia: International Research at University of Zagreb

This Research Pack Abroad summer research opportunity will provide students the opportunity to sharpen their research skills working with faculty at the University of Zagreb.

Summer 2027 opportunities

Faculty Mentor: Marko Vincekovic, Professor, Division of Agroecology and Chemistry

Our laboratory focuses on the development of sustainable encapsulation technologies for bioactive compounds and beneficial microorganisms intended for agricultural applications. Students will gain hands-on experience in the formulation and characterization of biopolymer-based microparticles using natural polymers such as alginate and other
biodegradable materials. Laboratory activities include the preparation of encapsulated bioactive components, optimization of encapsulation parameters, and evaluation of physicochemical properties, encapsulation
efficiency, and controlled-release behavior. Students will also participate in microbiological analyses, microscopy-based
characterization, and data interpretation. A major emphasis is placed on the application of biopolymer microparticles as biofertilizers for different plant species, including the assessment of their effects on plant growth, nutrient availability, and rhizosphere interactions under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. This multidisciplinary research
integrates green chemistry, biotechnology, and sustainable agriculture to develop environmentally friendly solutions that improve crop productivity and soil health.
