Manure Management Economics

Agriculture and Resource Economics Extension specialists have been investigating several issues related to animal waste. One is how regulation of animal waste is impacting the hog industry. Other research looks at some of economic implications of agricultural engineering solutions to manage animal waste. Several economists in the program have been researching the impact of hog farm locations on real estate property values.

Poultry

The research and extension programs on poultry are focused on economic organization of the poultry industry with a particular emphasis on incentives and information.

Most of the programs are in the areas of:

  • Production contracts
  • Integrator-grower relations
  • Regulation
  • Vertical integration

Swine

Based on cash receipts, hog production is the second largest commodity produced in the North Carolina agricultural economy. North Carolina is the second largest hog producer in the U.S. Agricultural and Resource Economics extension specialists provide resources on the economics of swine production including hog enterprise budgets and management.
