JC Raulston Arboretum presents two hands-on programs for kids

WHAT/WHEN: At the JC Raulston Arboretum’s “Natural Wrappers: From Tiny Seeds to Giant Trees” program, children will learn about how plants are formed and hunt for seeds of both the smallest plants and the biggest trees in the arboretum. Suggested age range: 5 and up. Rain or shine; please dress to be outdoors. Admission is $10 per family (member) or $15 per family (non-member). Sunday, Sept. 25, 2-4 p.m.

The Arboretum’s “Superhero Plants” program will offer children hands-on lessons on how plants survive attacks from predators and the harsh conditions of life outdoors. Suggested age range: 5-9. Adults are welcome to drop-off or stay for the program. Rain or shine; please dress to be outdoors and bring a peanut-free snack and water bottle. Admission is $12 per child (member) or $16 per child (non-member); parents are free. Friday, Sept. 30, 9:30 a.m. to noon.

WHERE: The JC Raulston Arboretum, 4415 Beryl Road, Raleigh, N.C.

WHO: The 10.5-acre JC Raulston Arboretum has one of the largest and most diverse collections of landscape plants adapted for landscape use in the Southeast. Plant collections include more than 5,000 total species and/or cultivars of annuals, perennials, bulbs, vines, groundcovers, shrubs and trees from more than 50 different countries. Maintained by N.C. State students, faculty, volunteers and staff members, the Arboretum is named in honor of its late director, Dr. J. C. Raulston, who founded it in 1976.
