Resources Available to Help Our Pack

Gateway on a snowy day.

This message was originally shared with the CALS community by Interim Associate Dean Kim Allen on April 28.

Reflecting upon the news shared by Chancellor Woodson yesterday, our hearts ache for our Wolfpack community and for our students. The CALS leadership team recognizes the difficulty and heartache associated with student deaths. This is especially difficult for faculty and staff that spend their days teaching and supporting students. We wanted to reach out to ensure you are aware of resources for yourself as you deal with these difficult emotions.

As the chancellor stated, we have access to resources via the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, and the State Health Plan members have access to mental health coverage and additional resources via the Behavioral Health Resource Center. We would like to encourage you that it is okay to seek support, and it is natural during this time to be experiencing intense emotions or numbness because everyone grieves differently.

In a message sent recently, the AP office reminded students of support resources and that our Embedded Counselor, Luke Strawn, holds drop-ins in the Bureau of Mines building on the following days and times:

  • Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m.
  • Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m.

Luke is also available to students for scheduled appointments by emailing lrstrawn@ncsu.edu or utilizing our Counseling Center’s Getting Started page. Please know the NC State Counseling Center is also available as a resource and is available for walk-ins between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and they have set up a number of walk-in events for students as outlined in the Chancellor’s letter. We will also continue offering a study space in 111 Patterson with additional opportunities for connection for students during finals.

While this is a difficult time, please know that you are not alone; your NC State CALS family cares about you.

Like the chancellor said, we are a Pack, and our Pack takes care of one another. Please be well, and feel free to reach out if there is anything we can do to help.
