CAALS 3D program (Creating Awareness of Agriculture and Life Sciences Disciplines, Degree Programs, and Discoveries) brings minority students from local high schools to NC State for a four-day research experience with faculty in our college, and we are still recruiting faculty to help with the 2017 cohort!
All areas of study welcome, including study areas in and out of laboratories.
The goal of this program is to introduce minority students with interests in science to the science of agriculture and biotechnology, one of the most prolific career paths in North Carolina.
Students will join us on campus from Monday, July 24, through Thursday, July 27, carrying out one of several research projects under the mentoring of faculty, postdocs and graduate students. Student groups present a short talk from their results at the closing symposium on July 27.
Program Schedule
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Expectations of participating faculty
- Set up a two-day research/learning project where students gain hands on experience using scientific equipment and or methodologies that will give them an interesting introduction to the area of study
- Work with at least three students assigned to your lab/work site for two days (July 25 and July 26) from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and on the last day (July 27) from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
- On the second day of the program (July 25) – have someone from the lab/work site meet the students assigned your experience in order to show them how to get to and from the lab/experience site for the next two days and have someone show the students how to get to and return from the nearest dinning hall
- Help the students create a short talk with power-point presentation, to show their fellow participants at the July 27th closing session reception that includes only the highlights of the time the students spent researching and any outcomes and conclusions the students were able to garner from the project (photos are strongly encouraged)
- Plan to attend the final July 27 closing reception from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Mountains Ballroom of the Talley Student Union on the main campus, in order to support your assigned students in their presentation of the research they conducted in your lab
