The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the members of its Equity Commission and the Agriculture Subcommittee, and Shorlette Ammons, equity in food systems extension associate, from the Center for Environmental Farming Systems at NC State University was selected to sit on the Equity Commission.

Ammons said, “I’m honored to serve as a member of the USDAs inaugural Equity Commission as a part of the Biden/Harris administration’s Executive Order to advance racial equity in the federal government.”

In this role, Ammons will serve alongside many food systems and civil rights advocates and activists. Advocates whom Ammons deeply respects and admires.

The 15 Equity Commission members will evaluate USDA programs and services and recommend how to reduce barriers in accessing the programs and services.

“I’m equally honored to represent Black, rural, queer communities and all of those who have been historically disenfranchised, oppressed, underserved, invisibilized and violently misrepresented,” said Ammons. “I know a commission of this nature is long overdue.”

While recognizing that the commission will not rectify past injustices resulting in long-term systemic inequities suffered by so many, Ammons said “I am humbly and seriously committed to serving the communities that have so graciously served, raised and nurtured me.”

Congratulations Shorlette! We know you will represent yourself, your community, CEFS and NC State University well.
