OIT is announcing the end-of-life of the www4 web service on December 31, 2018. At that time, sites delivered by www4 will no longer be delivered via the web. No content will be removed or destroyed. OIT will provide permanent redirects for any www4 URLs.
The www4 service started in the mid-90’s as a way to provide personal web space, as well as project locker space, to all campus users via AFS. The pages delivered by this service are not considered part of the university’s formal web presence. This is a featureless service without the availability of PHP, Shibboleth, or ServerSide Includes capabilities, among others.
Many alternatives exist today to allow campus users to host static as well as rich HTML content such as:
- Google Sites
- Google Drive
- WordPress Blogs
- Moodle (for course content)
- Github
