2022 LGBTQ+ History Month Diversity Observance Break

Pride Flag

Come celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with the CALS Office of Diversity and Inclusion!

Tuesday, Oct. 11, is “National Coming Out Day,” which presents the perfect opportunity to kick off a celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month. With this in mind, on Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Patterson Hall’s Rm. G-09, CALS ODI is asking everyone in the community to please take a small work/study break to join our, light refreshment-provided, networking event where you will have an opportunity to let your fellow NC State LGBTQ+ student, faculty and staff members know that you support them.

We have planned to have prominent NC State LGBTQ+ community members and allies join this break.  They have agreed to network with our community and be available for questions and discussions that are intended to provide our NC State LGBTQ+ community with resources and connections that will help them thrive in the CALS learning environment.  In addition to networking and getting to know one another, we also plan to discuss what book should be the next “CALS R.E.A.D.” book club reading selection.  Since our next CALS R.E.A.D. sessions will focus on the LGBTQ+ community, this will provide participants with another opportunity to engage in an even more in-depth study of this very important NC State sub-community.

As a reminder, “National Coming Out Day,” is an annual LGBTQ+ awareness day observed on Oct. 11, to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and to commemorate the first and second marches on Washington in 1979 and 1987 for LGBTQ+ rights. It coincides with LGBTQ+ history month, an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history, and the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements.

“LGBTQ+ History Month” was founded to provide role models, build community, and represent a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community.  As such, and in the spirit of the CALS ODI mission to welcome all communities to the NC State CALS family, our office hopes you will join us in taking time out to make sure the CALS LGBTQ+ community knows just how very valuable we believe them to be.
