“Econometric Analysis of Unexpected Injury Events in Bt Corn Fields: Is There Any Genetic Resistance to Bt Corn?”

Abstract: The first Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin, Cry3Bb1, for control of corn rootworm (CRW) was commercialized in 2003 and the first field-evolved resistances to this toxin ─ unexpected injury (UXI) events on Bt corn targeting CRW─ were discovered in Iowa in 2009 (Gassmann et al. 2011). In this study, we statistically analyze the drivers of CRW unexpected injury (UXI) events, and we try to explain whether there is an evidence that these UXI events are arising because of resistance to cry3Bb1 protein and what environmental conditions appear to increase UXI. Our findings indicate that there is no significant widespread evidence of CRW genetic resistance against Cry3Bb1 protein.

All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend!
