NC Choices hosts retreat for women in meat industry

A retreat in Chapel Hill May 20-22 will focus on the emerging role of women in the meat industry. The Women Working in the Meat Business Retreat is hosted by NC Choices and sponsored by the Farm Credit Associations of North Carolina. Scholarships are available for women meat producers, meat processors and food professionals from North Carolina.

Frances Seymour, a long-time advocate for forest preservation, will deliver the 2013 Borlaug Lecture April 16, 3 p.m., at N.C. State University’s Hunt Library Auditorium. Her speech topic is “Forests for Thought – The Dynamic Politics of Tropical Forests, Food Security and Climate Change.”

Extension Administration connects with employees live online

N.C. Cooperative Extension administrators embarked on a new strategy to communicate directly with all Extension employees twice each year. On Monday, March 11, they held the first Extension-wide webinar on N.C. State University’s Blackboard Collaborate system, and the meeting recording is now available for employees who were not able to attend.

N.C. State, UT scientists received grant to improve produce safety

KANNAPOLIS – A group of scientists at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and North Carolina State University are working together to improve the safety of organic produce – naturally. Their study, “Alternative Post-harvest Washing Solutions to Enhance the Microbial Safety and Quality of Organic Fresh Produce,” began last fall.

Maya Wiley, attorney and social activist, told a Center for Environmental Farming Systems audience last week in Durham that “we need to shine a light” on injustice within the food system that affects everyone from farmers to consumers.

Purdue recognizes Brandenburg as Distinguished Agriculture Alumnus

Dr. Rick Brandenburg, William Neal Reynolds Professor in the Department of Entomology, will be recognized March 1 as one of eight Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award winners at Purdue University. Brandenburg earned a bachelor's degree in entomology from Purdue in 1977.

Center for Environmental Farming Systems receives $3.9 million grant

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) has been awarded a five-year $3.9 million grant to build and evaluate supply chains for local farmers and fishers to supply large-scale markets in North Carolina. The grant was awarded by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
