Local 'green development' projects receive awards

Four local land development projects received awards from the Greater Triangle Stewardship Development Awards Program (GTSDA). The event, in conjunction with the City of Raleigh Environmental Awards, was held at the brand-new Nature Resource Center at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh.

Specialists Association meets May 15

The N.C. Association of Cooperative Extension Specialists (NCACES) will hold its final meeting of the academic year May 15, 9-11 a.m., 2405 Williams Hall. The agenda includes a panel on fee-for-service program options and experiences, administrative update, officer elections and awards. Snacks and beverages will be available, so stop by early to mingle.

Nigerian agriculturist visits CALS

Smallholder farmers in southeast Nigeria don’t have access to expertise from an extension service. But thanks to an enterprising journalist, farmers there can learn basic lessons about agriculture simply by turning on their battery-powered transistor radios to FARM 98.0 FM.

Nominations are being accepted for awards given by the North Carolina Association of Cooperative Extension Specialists. Winners will be recognized at the May 15 meeting of NCACES and will receive a cash award.

Warm winter brings early fruit, wheat maturity

This winter’s mild temperatures and the early onset of spring have some North Carolina agriculture crops maturing ahead of schedule. In most cases, the early crop maturity will not be a problem. But a late freeze could signal big problems for some crops.

Ready Business workshops will be offered

Fifty individuals in North Carolina outreach organizations were recently trained to help North Carolina businesses be better prepared for disaster. Trainers with North Carolina Cooperative Extension, the Industrial Extension Service and the Small Business and Technology Development Centers and N.C. Community Colleges are now organizing teams to present workshop for small and medium business owners across the state.

Guest lecturer Iowa State University Professor Dr. Max Rothschild has spent the last year as a Jefferson Science Fellow at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, sharing his ideas on how healthy livestock can play a key role in helping feed the world.

N.C. Cooperative Extension Program finalists to give presentations

The two finalists to become the next associate administrator for The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University have seminar presentations that will be open to SAES faculty, staff and students scheduled: beginning with a seminar by Dr. Karen G. Gehrt on Tuesday, April 3, and followed with a presentation by Dr. Fletcher Barber on Monday, April 9. Both seminars will be at the Godfrey Multi-Purpose Room at A&T's Coltrane Hall, and both will begin at 11 a.m.

NC Choices receives Rural Center grant

NC Choices, an initiative of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS), has received a $325,000 grant from the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center. The funds will be used over two years to provide small-scale, commercial meat processors across the state with assistance, including business development and technical training. The project is expected to help meat processors grow their businesses, create jobs and advance the niche meat industry in the state.
