N.C. 10% Campaign reaches $25 million mark

Break out a bottle of your favorite North Carolina wine and raise a toast: the N.C. 10% Campaign has hit a big milestone. The 10% Campaign, a Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) initiative, encourages all North Carolinians to spend 10 percent of their food dollars on locally grown and produced foods. The campaign has now recorded more than $25 million in local food purchases since its launch in July 2010.

N.C. State University hosts seminar for Fulbright students

More than 55 Fulbright students from around the world will tackle the challenges of the growing demand for food at the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Global Food Security Seminar hosted at N.C. State University, Oct. 17-20. The seminar will explore the multi-disciplinary issues related to global food security, as the world prepares to feed a population projected to be 9 billion by 2050.

$10 million gift names Poultry Science Department for Prestage family

North Carolina State University's Poultry Science Department has been renamed for the Prestage Family. Chancellor Randy Woodson announced a 10 million gift that will name and endow the department in N.C. State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

This summer, 64 agricultural agents from around the state came to Raleigh for N.C. Cooperative Extension’s seventh Livestock/Forage/Field Crop Agent Training Conference.

Program teaches participants to 'Shop Smart'

With just $10 to spend on food, a mother and her teenage daughter came away from a Durham Food Lion recently with quite a bit of food: two yogurts, bananas, lettuce, strawberries, cucumbers, salad dressing and bread. The two were among a group participating in Durham County Cooperative Extension’s “Shop Smart, Eat Smart and Move More” program.

N.C. 4-H'ers awarded more than $68,000 in scholarships

Students from across the state have received 4-H scholarships from the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund to attend institutions of higher learning. The foundation has awarded 76 scholarships to students from 45 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. The total amount of 4-H scholarships awarded this year, including renewable scholarships, cash awards through 4-H cumulative records programs and scholarships to attend national 4-H competitions, amounts to $68,450.

Cotton Field Day is Sept. 12

N.C. State University’s Cotton Field Day will take place Sept. 12 at the Upper Coastal Plain Research Station in Rocky Mount. The bi-annual event, co-sponsored by the N.C. Cotton Producers Association, will focus on latest research into cotton tillage, variety trials, disease and insect management and rotational considerations.
