Kyle Maddox

Biography
I grew up in Huntersville, NC and attended Hopewell High School. During the summer of my Junior year, I began working at Lakecross Veterinary Hospital as a Veterinary Assistant and discovered my desire to pursue a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. Upon reaching this realization, I applied to and was accepted by NC State University. While at NC State, I focused on gaining a broader understanding of the roles that veterinarians play in the community by volunteering with the NC State CVM Department of Shelter Medicine. In addition, I worked to diversify my animal experience and apply my acquired knowledge toward the advancement of the animal science field by serving as a research assistant in both Dr. Jack Odle’s swine nutrition lab and Dr. Paul Siciliano’s equine nutrition lab. During this time, I also discovered my passion for teaching and education. The amalgamation of this fervor along with my academic credetials awarded me opportunities to work as a peer supervisor for the UTC Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, serve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for both ANS 150 (Intro. to Animal Science) and ANS 206 (Anat. and Phys. of Domestic Animal Lab), and aid the Nutrition NUTS program in developing/ implementing a ten-week series of garden-based lesson plans that targeted adults within low income communities. I will graduate in the spring of 2011 with a degree in both Animal Science and Nutrition Science. My current ambitions are to recieve a dual DVM/ Ph.D. degree at an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine (focusing on clinical nutrition). Upon receiving this degree, I aspire to enter the veterinary field as a clinician and researcher. Following this, I hope to become further involved in academia by serving as a professor for either veterinary or undergraduate students.

  • Appointed position as Supplemental Instruction Program Peer Supervisor and was invited to speak at the SI International conference in New Orleans.

  • Served as the Event Coordination Co-Chair for the NCSU Inaugural Global Health Case Competition
  • Initiated an Honors contract with Dr. Suzie Goodell to develop and implement a ten-week series of garden-based lesson plans for low-income adults, so as to promote utility of local community gardens and reduce the prevalence of obesity in the area of interest (The work was displayed at the Undergraduate Teaching Symposium and is currently under consideration for publication)
