Agroecology educators come to NC State to learn

Nearly 150 educators from sustainable agriculture programs and student farms were in Raleigh earlier this month for the sixth annual Sustainable Agriculture Education Association Conference. Conference participants from around the country came to NC State University for panel discussions, farm and community garden tours and a kickoff dinner at the Agroecology Education Farm at the Lake Wheeler Road Education Unit.

When Robert Elliott imagines his future as a farmer, he sees a large operation with a nice market where customers can buy affordable, sustainably produced vegetables, fruit, chickens, turkeys and more. While it's just a dream right now, Elliott is making fast progress since the day when he found himself an unemployed veteran with no job prospects. He credits the support and knowledge he’s gotten from North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

Stallings is characterizing native vegetation, desirable adapted species and invasive weeds at Pinehurst No. 2, all in an effort to create a model for how course superintendents can approach sustainability.

N.C. 10% Campaign records $40 million in local food purchases

In just three years, the N.C. 10% Campaign, which encourages all North Carolinians and businesses to spend 10 percent of their food dollars on locally produced foods, has logged more than $40 million in expenditures. The campaign, which kicked off in July 2010, now counts more than 6,500 individuals and 850 businesses among its supporters.
