Ask an Expert All Stars honored for service

Linda Brandon, Master Gardener volunteer coordinator for N.C. Cooperative Extension in Guilford County, is at her computer quite a bit, assisting county homeowners with home garden questions. Brandon was among five N.C. Cooperative Extension professionals recognized as Ask an Expert All Stars by Extension Information Technology for quick responses to client questions asked through Extension’s Ask an Expert widget over the past year.

Land-grant universities honored with Borlaug Medallion

In recognition of the many contributions that land-grant universities like N.C. State University have made to improving food production, the World Food Prize has awarded its Borlaug Medallion to U.S. land-grant universities. This year, as N.C. State celebrates its 125th anniversary, land-grant universities across the country also are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act of 1862 that started the land-grant system.

Sam Pardue to lead CALS Academic Programs

Dr. Sam Pardue, head of the Department of Poultry Science at N.C. State University, has been appointed as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, effective July 1. He replaces Dr. Ken Esbenshade who is returning to the Animal Science Department after 11 years as associate dean.

Specialists receive program awards

An individual specialist and a team were recognized for program excellence at the May 15 meeting of the N.C. Association of Cooperative Extension Specialists. Robert Bardon received the Individual Program Award and members of the Livestock/Forage Agent Training Conference team received the Team Award.

Homeowners and soybean growers in North Carolina are in for a surprise this year, as kudzu bugs continue their march across the Southeast. This invasive pest congregates en masse on home siding and legumes, like soybeans.

Two North Carolina land-grant universities affiliated with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) – N.C. State University and N.C. A&T State University –were among those named regional winners of the C. Peter Magrath University Engagement Award for 2012, presented by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).

Tickets on sale for May 20 Farm to Fork Picnic

Tickets are now on sale for the 2012 Farm to Fork Picnic, held annually at the Breeze Farm in Orange County’s Hurdle Mills. The event – sponsored by the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS), Orange County/Breeze Farm Incubator, Slow Food Triangle, and the N.C. Agricultural Foundation – pairs some of the Triangle’s best chefs with local farmers and food producers to celebrate local food and local farms.

As N.C. State University’s baseball team took to the field against Duke University on April 28, military youth and their families -- representing all branches of North Carolina’s military -- were on hand to participate in the third annual Military Appreciation Day Baseball Game.
