USDA Announces National Teaching Awards; Treme Recognized for the Region

From the USDA press release “USDA Announces Teaching Awards for Food and Agricultural Sciences” and the Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in College and University Awards Program.

Julianne Treme, Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, has been recognized by the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) as a winner of the 2020 Excellence in College and University Teaching Award for Food and Agricultural Sciences. APLU is a research, policy, and advocacy organization dedicated to strengthening and advancing the work of public universities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. With a membership of 246 public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems, and affiliated organizations, APLU’s agenda is built on the three pillars of increasing degree completion and academic success, advancing scientific research, and expanding engagement. Annually, member campuses enroll 5.0 million undergraduates and 1.3 million graduate students, award 1.3 million degrees, employ 1.3 million faculty and staff, and conduct $49.3 billion in university-based research.

For Julianne, effective teaching is about being able to connect to all types of learners. As Teaching Associate Professor at NC State University since 2014, she connects to students through her empathy and ability to create engaging work. Her teaching focuses on developing creative assignments, maintaining rigor, keeping topics relevant to current events, and providing meaningful and active learning opportunities. She provides students with opportunities to collaborate and develop critical problem-solving skills by debating new ideas, engaging in team-based learning, creating policy-based infographics, using social media to connect with course content, and orally defending policy proposals.

Treme has published a series of peer-reviewed articles and created Excel for Agribusiness and Agribusiness Analytics courses to help students develop valued job market skills. Her online introductory economics course earned Quality Matters certification, an international and rigorous peer-review certification program.

She is the chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee for the national Agricultural Applied Economics Association (AAEA) and is serving as a DELTA Faculty Fellow at NC State, a group of faculty who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching and technology.

She has been recognized for her outstanding teaching through North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Educator Award, NC State College of Agriculture and Life Science (CALS), NACTA Teaching Award of Merit, CALS Outstanding Teacher Award, NC State Outstanding Teacher Award, and NC State Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award.

In recognition of her scholarship, exemplary pedagogy, and dedication to instruction, the award includes a $2,000 stipend to be used for improving teaching at NC State University.
