Eric Edwards Selected for AEPP Best Article Award
Eric Edwards, assistant professor and extension specialist, and Todd Guilfoos, associate professor at the University of Rhode Island, were selected to receive the Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy Best Article Award for their article, “The Economics of Groundwater Governance Institutions across the Globe.”
Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy, a journal published by the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, aims to present high-quality research to a broad audience.
The article, published in December 2020, provides an economic framework for understanding the emergence and purpose of groundwater governance across the globe. Edwards and Guilfoos assessed groundwater management along three dimensions: characteristics of the groundwater resource, externality problems and governance institutions.
“We find that groundwater management is a local problem solved by local actors,” Edwards said. “Worldwide we do not see broadly successful national or regional governance solutions to excess pumping, but there are many examples of localized over-extraction being solved by groups of users.”
Edwards will be honored at the Awards and Fellows Recognition Ceremony at the AAEA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, on Aug. 1, 2022.
Congratulations, Eric!
