{"id":6328,"date":"2024-09-05T20:39:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T20:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/vetpac-new\/?page_id=6328"},"modified":"2026-08-21T15:56:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T19:56:33","slug":"intern-tasks-and-responsibilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/vetpac\/canine-college-internship\/intern-tasks-and-responsibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Intern Tasks and Responsibilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students will be paired with several dogs for the semester to provide consistent interaction and be able to track the efficacy of the program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weekly interaction with dogs will focus on four areas:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Condition stock dogs to the tasks asked of them during teaching labs&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train dogs on leash-walking and other simple commands (e.g., sit, stand, down)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhance enrichment of stock dogs by increased human contact and activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote behavioral modification and humane handling techniques<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students must attend large-group and hands-on orientation sessions that provide a framework for the Canine College objectives and positive reinforcement-based training approach, an overview of the regulatory environment, and an introduction to biosecurity and the health and safety factors associated with working with animals.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each intern will work on a semester long project, which may serve as potential future research opportunities with their assigned dogs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each intern will also complete a case report on a dog of their choosing.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each student will be responsible for creating a case report as a means to summarize their interactions with their dogs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Spring and Fall Semesters:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interns are required to complete a minimum of two sessions per week with each dog assigned to them.&nbsp; Each session is about 1 hour in length including time to park, change into appropriate uniform, and time spent with the dog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canine College hours are 9:00am-2:00pm Monday-Friday.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internship shifts are flexible to a student\u2019s individual schedule within the time frame of established LAR hours of operation. Dog availability within hours of operation may vary depending on lab teaching sessions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students will check in with Canine College staff before starting sessions. Students must stay up to date with Canine College communications before starting shift.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Previous Canine College Projects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous Canine College interns have utilized behavioral and retrospective data to create projects that include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interns of the Fall 2024 Canine College research project shared a 23 question survey to adopters over the last 3 years to help them gain insight into the efficacy of the Canine College Program. They identified factors that would better prepare potential adopters with transitioning dogs into their new homes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Lab Animal Research Study- Can Old Dogs Learn New Tricks?&#8221;: The Canine College interns Fall of 2023 and Spring 2024 learned about laboratory animal medicine, its importance, factors of canine enrichment, and learned research principles to explore how responsive purpose-bred research beagles and hound canines were to training based upon different factors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New data analysis: creating a real time data display of dog and student interactions, progression, and behavior to be used to update members on canine college performance, as well as provide a foundation for overall program efficacy evaluation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous data analysis: organizing and analyzing data from previous program years for key metrics of program efficacy, canine performance and adaptability, and student participation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating a Canine College newsletter: establishing a framework for club communications, university communications, and LAR communications regarding canine college progress and updating key stakeholders at appropriate intervals throughout the semester.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dog identification catalog: creating a PowerPoint presentation of canine college dogs with each slide containing a picture of the dog in question, their name, and a brief blurb to serve as a tool for dog identification.
