Virtual VetCAMP Schedule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Virtual VetCAMP is a weeklong online program, hosted on Zoom, designed to offer high school students a similar experience to in-person VetCAMP with added flexibility. New to Virtual VetCAMP, campers were able to purchase a dissection kit and preform self-guided dissections. The optional dissection kit included a brain, heart, eye, kidney and fetal pig. Campers also had the opportunity to interact with variety of veterinary professionals such as the staff at the NC Museum of Natural Science’s Window on Animal Health, the NC State CVM Admissions Team and the NC State CVM Turtle Rescue Team<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This whole program was very well put together and I enjoyed every minute of it.<\/p>

Hematology Discussion<\/h3>\n \n\n \t \t

These are two relatively normal serum samples from two equine patients, so can you guess why they look so different?

ANSWER: The sample on the left is from a donkey, while the sample on the right is from a horse!

The serum from a horse is much more yellow when compared to other species because horses have much higher levels of bilirubin; a red-yellowish pigment that is produced when red blood cells are broken down. This is the same pigment responsible for jaundice in both humans and animals! Most other species (dogs, cats, cattle, birds, humans, etc.) should produce a clear or faint yellow serum, and a deeper yellow that would be normal in horses may indicate disease in other species.<\/p>\n\t \t \n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

TRT President<\/h3>\n \n\n \t \t

Turtle Rescue Team is a group of volunteer veterinary students and undergraduate students who help treat local reptiles such as the Eastern Box Turtle and the Common Snapping Turtle. Emma, the president of Turtle Rescue Team, provided campers with a virtual tour of the facility shared some of TRT’s current cases.<\/p>\n\t \t \n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\n

During the Day 5 Morning Session, campers who opted for the independent dissections completed their final dissection of a Kidney. Students were asked to identify various anatomical parts. Students discussed their experiences with other campers in the dissection discussion forum and completed a dissection quiz to test their knowledge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Day 5 Afternoon Session, campers joined Zoom for the final time to share their service projects with fellow campers and completed a quick Virtual VetCAMP Feedback form.<\/p>\n\n\n
