Frances Turner

Ever since the age of 5, I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian. There is still a poster from 1st grade depicting my dream to become a veterinarian hanging in my childhood home in Charlotte, NC. As soon as I was 16, I found a job working at Long Animal Hospital in Charlotte. This experience cemented the fact that I loved the veterinarian profession. I worked closely with the staff, doctors, and animals at Long’s for 6 years. Upon high school graduation, I chose NC State to pursue my Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. During my freshman year, I had the opportunity to join Chi Omega sorority which led to many leadership roles. I held the positions of New Member Educator and Alumni Coordinator; these experiences prepared me for my future endeavors. Another opportunity I had while in undergraduate school was the participation in the CALS Honors Program. Through this program I was able to research and work with Dr. Flowers and serve as a TA for ANS 220. In 2006 I graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Animal Science. From there I decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Animal Science with a concentration in reproductive physiology under Dr. Flowers. During my Master’s program, I served as Animal Science GSA President, presented at the National Animal Science meeting, and was the TA for 4 semesters of Introductory Biology. In 2008 I earned my Master’s degree and began my first year at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. Since beginning the program, I have become the President of the class of 2012 and the Pfizer Student Representative. I did not take the traditional route to Veterinary School, but now in my third year, I can say it was well worth it.
