CALS Honors FAQ

How do I participate in the new CALS Honors program?

Will my participation in CALS Honors prevent me from joining other honors programs at NC State?

You can still participate in University ScholarsUniversity Honors, or other enhanced learning activities around campus. Most of our current CALS Honors students participate in at least one other college or university enhancement program.

What does the new program require?

CALS Honors challenges you to expect more from yourself inside and outside of the classroom. For students entering NC State in Fall 2015 or after, see the description of the new P.A.T.H. program for options to achieve your Honors credentials. You can participate in the program through honors coursework, independent research, or study abroad.

How do I become involved with CALS Honors?

Participation in the CALS Honors program is by invitation only. Invitations to incoming freshman are based on high school GPA and standardized test scores. Supplemental invitations may be given to NCSU students with more than 30 student credit hours and a 3.35 cumulative GPA or higher.

Do you have guidelines on formatting the poster for ALS 398H?

Note: These guidelines are for the poster presentation required for all three P.A.T.H. options.

Student groups in ALS 398H (and all CALS P.A.T.H. options at the completion of the CALS Honors experience) will design and present a poster at the CALS Honors Symposium. All posters should include the title of the topic, the group members’ names, and the faculty mentor’s name and department. We recommend this guide to effective poster design and presentation.

How do I format the ALS 498H research proposal?

five-page proposal (double spaced) will help you define goals, focus your efforts and create expectations of the project. For a clear research proposal, include these elements:

  • Justification – why the project is important
  • Objective(s) – what you can accomplish in the timeframe
  • Methodology – the process for the research or teaching
  • Expected outcome – what results you anticipate
  • References – must cite at least five

What about the final scientific research paper for ALS 499H?

The final report is to be formatted as a scientific article and include these sections:

  • Abstract
  • Introduction with a literature review
  • Materials and Methods
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusions
  • References

Consult the NCSU Libraries website for more information on how to format reports (see an example 499H final report) and cite references.
