Meanwhile, costs are increasing for vital inputs such as fertilizer and fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news: Agricultural biotechnology innovators are developing potential solutions to these and other industry challenges. In North Carolina alone, there are more than 180 agtech companies and hundreds of world-class agtech scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More good news: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cals.ncsu.edu\/psi\">North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/ncsu.edu\">North Carolina State University<\/a> has been selected as one of only two U.S. research hubs to collaborate and advance promising agtech companies seeking to overcome these challenges. The other hub is the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Innovate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solving Grand Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers are working with the first cohort of companies selected for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/harvestagtech.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HARVEST AgTech<\/a>&nbsp;program, a global technology validation platform led by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theyieldlabinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yield Lab Institute<\/a> in St. Louis. Cohort companies were selected through a competitive, independent evaluation process, with each company receiving funding specifically to support their commercialization efforts through research projects with either university partner. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">It\u2019s a way to speed up the process of effectively moving these technologies from the testing lab to the farm and into growers\u2019 hands as quickly as possible.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe launch of our first HARVEST cohort marks an exciting new chapter for ag-tech innovation,\u201d said Yield Lab Institute Executive Director Stephanie Regagnon. \u201cThrough this new platform, we are bringing together entrepreneurs, scientists and industry leaders to accelerate the development of next-generation tools and technologies that farmers and food systems urgently need. This inaugural cohort, focused on biological solutions, reflects the extraordinary breadth of innovation emerging across agriculture today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">N.C. PSI\u2019s participation in the HARVEST program aligns closely with its mission to solve grand challenges in agriculture and the environment through interdisciplinary science, workforce development and partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough HARVEST AgTech, we get to work with innovative technologies that can make a big difference for farmers,\u201d said Adrian Percy, N.C. PSI\u2019s executive director. \u201cIt\u2019s a way to speed up the process of effectively moving these technologies from the testing lab to the farm and into growers\u2019 hands as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HARVEST represents the next evolution of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/in2ecosystem.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator<\/a>\u2019s (IN2) agtech program, a $55 million initiative that has supported 77 startups, catalyzed more than $3 billion in follow-on funding and generated 18 successful company exits. The new program builds on this proven foundation while expanding the program\u2019s global reach and technical partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">Leveraging the N.C. PSI\u2019s interdisciplinary, basic and field research capabilities will assist cohort companies to further advance their innovation to add value to agriculture.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbiotech.org\/\">North Carolina Biotechnology Center<\/a> \u201chas supported the HARVEST model for years,\u201d said Paul Ulanch, the center\u2019s senior director of focused initiatives. NCBiotech was part of the original IN2 effort, led by the National Renewable Energy Lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a HARVEST ecosystem partner, NCBiotech continues to support the HARVEST program today, he said. \u201cIt has allowed us to recognize innovative companies and nominate them for consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He congratulated N.C. PSI on well-deserved recognition as one of the technical partner research hubs for the first HARVEST cohort. \u201cLeveraging the N.C. PSI\u2019s interdisciplinary, basic and field research capabilities will assist cohort companies to further advance their innovation to add value to agriculture,\u201d Ulanch added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pluton Biosciences and Prospect Growth in First Cohort<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">N.C. PSI faculty affiliates and staff members are working with two companies in the cohort: Pluton Biosciences, based in St. Louis, and Prospect Growth, of Newton, MA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plutonbio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pluton Biosciences<\/a>\u2019 sun-powered microbial systems deliver agronomically relevant amounts of nitrogen and improve phosphorus availability during plant growth, helping growers strengthen nutrient programs. Pluton Biosciences\u2019 solutions support resilient crop production and reduce dependence on volatile global input supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prospect.ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prospect Growth<\/a>&nbsp;uses nanoscale material engineering to develop and manufacture more efficient fertilizers. Their goal is to help growers increase farm profitability and reduce nutrient inputs. Modern agriculture depends on synthetic fertilizers, yet most formulations have seen little change in decades. Prospect Growth\u2019s technology could change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">A match made in heaven.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adam Blaszczak, Pluton\u2019s vice president of research and development, met recently with the PSI team for a project kick-off meeting in NC&#160;State University\u2019s Plant Sciences Building. He described the opportunity to work with such advanced science at N.C. PSI as \u201ca match made in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had already been very interested in soil and nutrient research being conducted by two N.C. PSI scientists: Alex Woodley and Mallory Choudoir\u201d Blaszczak said, making the HARVEST opportunity \u201camazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Woodley is an associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/crop-and-soil-sciences\/\">crop and soil sciences<\/a>. His research looks at soil productivity and profitability in sustainable and organic cropping systems. Each will also support the other project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Woodley sees the Pluton project as an opportunity to improve nitrogen-loss pathways, reducing harmful environmental effects. Nitrogen, one of the main components of fertilizer, promotes plant growth and enhances crop yield. As nitrogen is broken down by soil microbes, it becomes nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAbout 75 percent of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere comes from fertilizer,\u201d Woodley said. She emphasized that crops rely on microbial communities and their environments, or microbiomes, for plant growth and resistance to disease and insects.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/cifr.ncsu.edu\/index.php\/2026\/05\/01\/mallory-choudoir-wins-faculty-paper-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">award-winning paper<\/a>, she put microbes in a larger context: \u201cMicrobiomes are essential for human, animal, plant and ecosystem health. Despite widespread recognition of the importance of microbiomes, there is little attention paid to monitoring and safeguarding microbial ecologies on policy levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:post-content --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>She is pleased to be working with the companies around nutrient dynamics to develop solutions for sustainable agriculture and is passionate about the importance of her tiny research subjects: \u201cMicrobes are doing all the good stuff,\u201d Choudoir said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:ncst\/pullquote --><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color\">\n<div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content\">\u201cAgriculture uses roughly a third of global land, but agtech can be unusually difficult for innovation because biological cycles and field seasons often limit meaningful testing to just one or two opportunities per year.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Wyatt Arnold, co-founder of Prospect Growth, also praised the opportunity to work with N.C. PSI researchers. \u201cMallory and Alex have been great collaborators in this initiative,\u201d he said. \u201cAligning motivations of industry and academia can sometimes not be straightforward, but I think their openness to explore and resolve this alignment \u2026 has made for a special opportunity at NC&#160;State, so we\u2019re just really grateful for their tenacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Arnold outlined why it is so challenging to develop and scale ag-tech innovations. \u201cAgriculture uses roughly a third of global land, but agtech can be unusually difficult for innovation because biological cycles and field seasons often limit meaningful testing to just one or two opportunities per year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>By comparison, AI or software innovation can happen faster. \u201cThose products can be iterated multiple times in a single day. PSI-Pluton Biosciences kick-off meeting was winding down, participants emphasized the ultimate purpose of the projects and the research that goes into them: making farming more environmentally friendly and cost-effective for current and future farmers.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all care about the growers,\u201d said Kathleen Denya, N.C. PSI\u2019s director of innovation partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In addition to Pluton and Prospect, the first cohort consists of Agragene, an agricultural biotechnology company pioneering sustainable pest control solutions; Impetus Agriculture, developers of two platforms that restore and enhance performance of microbial biopesticides; Invasive Species Corp., which discovers and deploys bio-based solutions to control destructive invasive species; NewLeaf Symbiotics, a pioneer and leader of pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophs, microbes that are found widely in the environment and, when grown symbiotically with crops, can increase yield; and SugaROX, developing next-generation biostimulants to control key metabolic pathways and stress responses within plant cells. PSI\u2019s interdisciplinary, basic and field research capabilities will assist cohort companies to further advance their innovation to add value to agriculture.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbiotech.org\/\">North Carolina Biotechnology Center<\/a> \u201chas supported the HARVEST model for years,\u201d said Paul Ulanch, the center\u2019s senior director of focused initiatives. NCBiotech was part of the original IN2 effort, led by the National Renewable Energy Lab.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As a HARVEST ecosystem partner, NCBiotech continues to support the HARVEST program today, he said. \u201cIt has allowed us to recognize innovative companies and nominate them for consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>He congratulated N.C. PSI on well-deserved recognition as one of the technical partner research hubs for the first HARVEST cohort. \u201cLeveraging the N.C. PSI\u2019s interdisciplinary, basic and field research capabilities will assist cohort companies to further advance their innovation to add value to agriculture,\u201d Ulanch added.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>Pluton Biosciences and Prospect Growth in First Cohort<\/strong><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>N.C. PSI faculty affiliates and staff members are working with two companies in the cohort: Pluton Biosciences, based in St. Louis, and Prospect Growth, of Newton, MA.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plutonbio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pluton Biosciences<\/a>\u2019 sun-powered microbial systems deliver agronomically relevant amounts of nitrogen and improve phosphorus availability during plant growth, helping growers strengthen nutrient programs. Pluton Biosciences\u2019 solutions support resilient crop production and reduce dependence on volatile global input supply chains.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prospect.ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prospect Growth<\/a>&nbsp;uses nanoscale material engineering to develop and manufacture more efficient fertilizers. Their goal is to help growers increase farm profitability and reduce nutrient inputs. Modern agriculture depends on synthetic fertilizers, yet most formulations have seen little change in decades. Prospect Growth\u2019s technology could change that.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:ncst\/pullquote {\"value\":\"\u201cA match made in heaven.\u201d\",\"textColor\":\"indigo_400\"} -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-ncst-pullquote has-indigo-400-text-color has-quotes\"><div class=\"pullquote-container\"><p class=\"pullquote-content\">A match made in heaven.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:ncst\/pullquote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Adam Blaszczak, Pluton\u2019s vice president of research and development, met recently with the PSI team for a project kick-off meeting in NC State University\u2019s Plant Sciences Building. He described the opportunity to work with such advanced science at N.C. PSI as \u201ca match made in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cWe had already been very interested in soil and nutrient research being conducted by two N.C. PSI scientists: Alex Woodley and Mallory Choudoir\u201d Blaszczak said, making the HARVEST opportunity \u201camazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Woodley is an associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/crop-and-soil-sciences\/\">crop and soil sciences<\/a>. His research looks at soil productivity and profitability in sustainable and organic cropping systems. Each will also support the other project.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Woodley sees the Pluton project as an opportunity to improve nitrogen-loss pathways, reducing harmful environmental effects. Nitrogen, one of the main components of fertilizer, promotes plant growth and enhances crop yield. As nitrogen is broken down by soil microbes, it becomes nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cAbout 75 percent of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere comes from fertilizer,\u201d Woodley said. Fertilizer chemicals also can be found in agricultural run-off, contributing to water-system pollution and algae growth that can lead to fish kills.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":83145,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/psi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2026\/08\/choudoir-1024x599.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83145\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Microbiologist Mallory Choudoir calls microbiomes, or microbial communities and their environments, essential for the health of humans, animals, plants and ecosystems. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Choudoir, an assistant professor and Extension specialist, researches the complex ecosystem of tiny microbes essential to agriculture. She emphasized that crops rely on microbial communities and their environments, or microbiomes, for plant growth and resistance to disease and insects.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/cifr.ncsu.edu\/index.php\/2026\/05\/01\/mallory-choudoir-wins-faculty-paper-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">award-winning paper<\/a>, she put microbes in a larger context: \u201cMicrobiomes are essential for human, animal, plant and ecosystem health. PSI researchers. \u201cMallory and Alex have been great collaborators in this initiative,\u201d he said. \u201cAligning motivations of industry and academia can sometimes not be straightforward, but I think their openness to explore and resolve this alignment \u2026 has made for a special opportunity at NC State, so we\u2019re just really grateful for their tenacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Arnold outlined why it is so challenging to develop and scale ag-tech innovations. \u201cAgriculture uses roughly a third of global land, but agtech can be unusually difficult for innovation because biological cycles and field seasons often limit meaningful testing to just one or two opportunities per year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>By comparison, AI or software innovation can happen faster. \u201cThose products can be iterated multiple times in a single day. PSI-Pluton Biosciences kick-off meeting was winding down, participants emphasized the ultimate purpose of the projects and the research that goes into them: making farming more environmentally friendly and cost-effective for current and future farmers.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all care about the growers,\u201d said Kathleen Denya, N.C. PSI\u2019s director of innovation partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In addition to Pluton and Prospect, the first cohort consists of Agragene, an agricultural biotechnology company pioneering sustainable pest control solutions; Impetus Agriculture, developers of two platforms that restore and enhance performance of microbial biopesticides; Invasive Species Corp., which discovers and deploys bio-based solutions to control destructive invasive species; NewLeaf Symbiotics, a pioneer and leader of pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophs, microbes that are found widely in the environment and, when grown symbiotically with crops, can increase yield; and SugaROX, developing next-generation biostimulants to control key metabolic pathways and stress responses within plant cells.
