The Plant Sciences Building on Centennial Campus earned the designation in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cals.ncsu.edu\/psi\">N.C. PSI\u2019s research operations manager, led efforts to secure the Sustainable Lab certification for the Plant Sciences Building.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.ncsu.edu\/get-involved\/green-certification\/sustainable-labs\/\">Sustainable Labs<\/a> program, launched in January 2024, is a collaboration of the&nbsp;NC&#160;State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.ncsu.edu\/\">Sustainability Office<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energymanagement.ncsu.edu\/\">Energy Management<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/recycling.ncsu.edu\/\">Waste Reduction and Recycling<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ehs.ncsu.edu\/\">Environmental Health and Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At NC&#160;State, labs make up 27% of the built environment, consume about 45% of the university\u2019s total energy budget and account for more than half of all single-use plastic purchases, Pacelli says. The Sustainable Lab certification focuses on improving energy and water efficiency, waste reduction and overall operational practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNormally, certification is completed for individual labs, but in this case, I certified the entire building, which streamlined the process and saved significant time,\u201d Pacelli says. \u201cI completed the Sustainable Labs training, reviewed the campus guidelines and worked through the full checklist across all PSB lab spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The checklist covers operational practices such as managing cold storage efficiently, reducing single-use plastics, improving fume-hood sash management and ensuring equipment is powered down when not in use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI documented these practices, confirmed our resource-reduction measures and coordinated with Environmental Health and Safety to ensure we met the program\u2019s sustainability and safety criteria before submitting the building for certification,\u201d Pacelli says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N.C.
