Tracking a Plant Killer: Historical and Scientific Reflections on the Irish Famine Pathogen

March 17 | 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Dr. Jean Ristaino stands next to potato plots in the backyard of Down House, Charles Darwin’s home.

Featuring Jean Ristaino
William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor
Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology

4 p.m. Monday, March 17
Plant Sciences Building, Seminar Room
Reception to Follow

Spend St. Patrick’s Day with Jean Ristaino as she explores the migrations and spread of the pathogen Phytophthora infestans, which entered the shores of Ireland in 1845 and devastated the potato crop.

Ristaino describes the famine years like a crime scene, investigating the victims and the culprits and shining a light on the many detectives or ‘Sherlocks of Spuds’ who worked to identify the suspected pathogen, suggest remedies and crack the case.

In this lecture, you will learn how Ristaino used natural history collections and herbarium specimens to track this plant killer.
