Area(s) of Expertise

Olivia’s master’s research dealt with animal feed manufacturing, feed ingredient handling characteristics and the effects of lipid encapsulation on vitamin and mineral premixes. Her current research is on the anatomy and physiology of the poultry ceca and the use of different products and feed additives to alter the cecal environment in order to improve bird health. She is focused specifically on evaluating the cycling of the ceca, improving poult hydration during transportation and targeted delivery of products to the ceca for antimicrobial purposes.

Career Goals

After completing her Ph.D. degree, Olivia plans to pursue a career in the animal and poultry nutrition/feed additive industry. She is also planning to start an MBA degree while she finishes her Ph.D. Olivia is interested in product development and marketing as well as public communication about agriculture.


Olivia was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. She enjoys spending time outdoors hiking or horseback riding and is currently working on her Ph.D. in Animal and Poultry Science under the direction of Robert Beckstead and Peter Ferket.
