Bio

Dr. Jesse Grimes earned his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees from NC State University. He develops and implements new and improved management practices for turkey producers to maximize their production efficiency, profitability and product quality, as well as developing programs for turkey producers in management, nutrition and waste management. He mentors graduate and undergraduate students and teaches two undergraduate classes.

Area(s) of Expertise

The major areas of Dr. Grimes' research and Extension interests are the effect of management on turkey production, turkey reproduction and turkey waste handling. His research activities include examining various rearing methods and feeding regimens for the production of market and breeder turkeys to determine optimum management practices. He is also interested in methods to reduce fecal and litter nutrients of turkeys and broilers.

Extension activities include

  • hosting N.C. Turkey Industry Days,
  • participating in the Targeting Excellence Initiative,
  • conducting animal welfare audits and
  • supporting departmental and area Extension faculty.

Courses taught include

  • Meat Bird Production (PO 424, Turkeys and Broilers) and
  • Gamebird Production (PO 410).
