Top North Carolina companies

Recently Fortune Magazine published its annual list of top 500 companies in the country, and as N.C. State University economist Mike Walden points out, several North Carolina companies made the list.

“These are companies ranked in terms of revenues. … North Carolina had 15 companies on the Top 500 list. So, that’s good. And we also had two companies in the Top 50 list. They were Bank of America, which was number nine, and Lowe’s which was number 50.

“Now, of course, when you’re looking at companies in the U.S. and you say what is the largest, it is Walmart. And of course Walmart is headquartered in Arkansas. Walmart is simply an enormous company. It has over $400 billion of revenues annually. And it has over 2 million employees.

“So, we don’t have Walmart headquartered in North Carolina, but we do have some Top 50 and Top 500 companies.”
