AgPack Strong: Ag Institute Grad Jason Barbour Diversifies

Johnston County farmer Jason Barbour grows a lot of the usual North Carolina crops – tobacco, sweet potatoes, small grains, soybeans and corn. But in recent years, with help from NC State Extension, the NC State Agricultural Institute grad added a crop that wouldn’t make that list: popcorn.

Bruneau Golf Tournament sponsor gives back to turfgrass program

When Ken Heltemes moved to Raleigh from Ohio in 1987 to start a new Barefoot Grass Lawn Service franchise, he didn’t know much about turfgrass. That changed when he crossed paths with Dr. Art Bruneau, namesake for an annual golf tournament that raises funds for CALS' turfgrass program.

Paving the way: CALS alumna Margaret Carter

Hanging among the family photos and memorabilia that line the front hallway of Margaret Carter’s home is a framed letter from late N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Jim Graham, thanking Carter for her many years of service. The letter serves as a testament to her career, but it’s Graham's handwritten note at the page's bottom, signed “your friend,” that speaks volumes.
