Raulston Blooms & Birds: a garden festival for all ages

Featuring the JC Raulston Arboretum’s annual plant sale, bird house competition displays, gardening demonstrations, children’s activities, local arts and crafts vendors, gourmet food trucks and more, the Raulston Blooms & Birds Garden Festival will be held Sat., April 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the JC Raulston Arboretum (JRCA).
Tickets to the public event are $10 per family or $5 per person and free to JCRA members. Sponsorships also are available. The arboretum is located at 4415 Beryl Road in Raleigh, two blocks from the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.
Set in the arboretum’s beautiful springtime gardens, the festival will offer an abundant plant sale with 10 percent discount to JCRA members. The bird house competition, to be displayed in the McSwain Education Center, will feature unusual bird house creations from all age groups. The festival also will spotlight local artisans with distinctive crafts for sale, and gourmet food truck vendors will be set up near the arboretum’s annual color trial beds.
NC State’s Howling Cow ice cream will be for sale, and there will a number of gardening demonstrations, from planting the perfect container garden to pruning 101. There also will be fun festivities for children, including a maze and hands-on activities
The JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC, is a nationally acclaimed garden with the most diverse collection of cold hardy temperate zone plants in the southeastern United States. The Arboretum is free and open to the public 365 days of the year. As a part of the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University, the Arboretum is a working research and teaching garden that focuses on the evaluation, selection, and display of plant material gathered from around the world. Plants especially adapted to Piedmont North Carolina conditions are identified in an effort to find better plants for southern landscapes. The Arboretum is named in honor of Dr. J.C. Raulston, its late director who founded it in 1976.
