On Saturday, March 19, 4-H Camp Millstone will host a tree planting and dedicate a meditation garden in memory of Matthew Silliman, who was a 4-H’er and counselor at the camp. Silliman’s life was taken by youth violence in November 2008.

“Matt’s friends organized the event to remember the enthusiasm and compassion he shared with campers and to provide a place of reflection in the newly renovated camp,” said Brad Dixon, assistant director of development for the N.C. 4-H Development Fund.

The meditation area, which will be called “Matt’s Nook,” will include a tree identification kiosk where youth can learn about the natural environment. The “Matthew Silliman Counselor-in-Training Scholarship” also will be initiated at the event to support leadership training at the camp.

Media are invited to attend the event, which takes place Saturday, March 19, at 10 a.m., at Camp Millstone, located in Ellerbe, N.C.
