Juntos Summit brings Latino youth to campus
This summer, more than 50 Latino youngsters took part in a week-long camp experience – the Juntos Youth Summer Summit – on the N.C. State University campus, July 11-15.
The Juntos program is overseen by Dr. Andrew Behnke, assistant professor and Extension specialist, and Cintia Aguilar, Extension associate and Latino affairs facilitator, both in the Department of 4-H and Family and Consumer Sciences. It provides Latino parents and youth with knowledge and resources aimed to help 8th to 12th graders succeed in school, avoid dropping out and work with their families toward gaining access to college.
Juntos partnered with the 4-H mentoring program Youth and Families with Promise to facilitate the summit, said Dr. Kim Allen, Extension specialist. Diana Urieta of 4-H and Family and Consumer Sciences coordinated the summit’s week of activities.
Among workshops and activities offered during the summit week were “Get the Job YOU Want,” “Exploring a creative Design to Serve the Community,” “Mask Making” (decorating masks of your face to show who you are and who you want to be), “Financial Smarts,” “Biology, Zoology, Public Health and Medicine Combined: What Career Can do That?” and “Health Rocks!”
The group also had the opportunity to tour the main university campus, Centennial Campus, the College of Veterinary Medicine, dormitories and athletic facilities (including attending a Wolfpack soccer game), as well as go to the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and tour downtown Raleigh. They also enjoyed a Frisbee scavenger hunt, a mid-week dance party and a Carolina Mudcats game.
The summit culminated with the youngsters presenting projects based on the week’s lessons. – Terri Leith
