Deborah Cox named Stokes Extension director

Deborah Cox, family and consumer sciences agent in Caldwell County, has been named to direct Cooperative Extension programs in Stokes County.

Cox’s appointment as Stokes extension director was announced by Sheri Schwab, associate director and director of county operations for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University, and Rick Morris, Stokes County manager. The appointment is effective April 1.

Cox joined Cooperative Extension in 1997 as a nutrition program assistant in Catawba County. Two years later, in 1999, she was hired as an extension family and consumer sciences agent in Caldwell County.  Cox was a teacher assistant with the Durham school system and activity coordinator at the Duke University Diet and Fitness Center before joining Cooperative Extension.

The new Stokes director holds a master’s degree in agricultural education from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s degree in health and recreation from the State University of New York at Brockport.

“Debbie Cox has a wealth of experience providing nutrition, health, finance and other programs to clients. She has developed successful partnerships with schools, health departments and other youth and family agencies,” said Jim Cowden, director for extension’s North Central District, which includes Stokes County. “Her prior experience and sound work ethic will serve her well in her new role as county extension director in Stokes County.”

Cowden said in addition to her administrative duties as county director, Cox will provide family and consumer sciences programs in Stokes County.
