Club raises ag awareness

With National Ag Day being celebrated throughout the nation on March 19, Alpha Zeta at N.C. State has focused the spotlight on agriculture during a week of activities, mainly on the university brickyard.

Alpha Zeta is a professional fraternity for students and industry professionals in the agriculture and natural resources fields.

On the brickyard, sheep, goats, cows, chickens, pigs, a tractor and a crop sprayer are on display as part of the fraternity’s Agricultural Awareness Week, and an information tent features displays staffed by representatives of agriculture-related student organizations.

Joe Reardon of NCDA&CS (center) competed in the milking contest.

The week’s activities kicked off with an Ag Olympics featuring two popular faculty members, and on Tuesday WRAL-TV meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner and Joe Reardon of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services faced off in a milking contest that judges ultimately declared a tie.

On Wednesday, a panel of experts will discuss food security and safety in a panel discussion set for 5 p.m. in 321 Riddick Hall.

Then on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., an N.C. State University student, faculty member or staff member who has gotten the most donations in a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will get to kiss a pig. CALS Dean Richard Linton is among the contestants.
