CALS animal science grad students shine at Midwestern competition

Three College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students brought home the bacon from a March competition. Yan Zhao, Alexandra Chaytor and Jocelyn Bishop – all N.C. State University graduate students in animal science – were winners in the graduate competition at the Midwestern meeting of the American Society of Animal Science, held in Des Moines, Iowa.

Zhao took a first place in Ph.D. Graduate Student Oral Competition for his presentation, “Effect of heat stress on oxidative stress status and reproductive performance of sows.” Bishop was first in the M.S. Graduate Student Oral Competition for “Effect of crossfostering on survival and growth of swine in finishing.” And Chaytor was second in the Ph.D. Graduate Student Poster Competition for her display, “Efficacy of yeast based feed additives to reduce the effects of chronic exposure to deoxynivalenol and zearalenone on internal organ health of pigs.”

Their research projects were each supported in part by the N.C. pork industry, N.C. Pork Council, N.C. Agricultural Foundation, Murphy-Brown, Prestage Farms and Ag proVision. More than 50 graduate students representing 22 universities from the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea competed.

Said Dr. Todd See, head of the CALS Animal Science Department, “Congratulations to each of them on their accomplishments and their outstanding representation of our program.” – Terri Leith
