{"id":13588,"date":"2023-11-09T11:00:24","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T16:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/molecular-and-structural-biochemistry\/?post_type=person&#038;p=13588"},"modified":"2024-01-08T18:35:10","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T23:35:10","slug":"13588","status":"publish","type":"person","link":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/molecular-and-structural-biochemistry\/people\/13588\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Luther"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s8\">For the last two years, <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Dr. Michael Luther<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> has <\/span><span class=\"s8\">led North American Business Development<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> efforts<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> for Astellas as<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> Global<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">Head of <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Search &amp; Evaluation<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> in Business Development<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">and Head of <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Astellas Ventures <\/span><span class=\"s8\">to <\/span><span class=\"s8\">drive deals and investments <\/span><span class=\"s8\">that<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> support Astellas<\/span><span class=\"s8\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> drug discovery and development efforts from emerging start-ups to <\/span><span class=\"s8\">acquisition of <\/span><span class=\"s8\">late-stage<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">clinical assets.<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">This includes over 9 deals including <\/span><span class=\"s8\">2 <\/span><span class=\"s8\">N<\/span><span class=\"s8\">ewCo spinouts<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> in less than two years<\/span><span class=\"s8\">. <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Mike <\/span><span class=\"s8\">has <\/span><span class=\"s8\">over 3<\/span><span class=\"s8\">5<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> years\u2019 experience as an<\/span><span class=\"s8\">entrepreneurial scientist and<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">executive <\/span><span class=\"s8\">in<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> the<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> biopharmaceutical industry<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> including <\/span><span class=\"s8\">various <\/span><span class=\"s8\">senior leadership<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">roles <\/span><span class=\"s8\">ranging from<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> biotech start-u<\/span><span class=\"s8\">ps <\/span><span class=\"s8\">to <\/span><span class=\"s8\">global <\/span><span class=\"s8\">pharmaceutical <\/span><span class=\"s8\">companies<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> and CROs<\/span><span class=\"s8\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s8\">Before joining Astellas, <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Mi<\/span><span class=\"s8\">ke<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">was <\/span><span class=\"s8\">the CEO <\/span><span class=\"s8\">and founder of<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">Bantam Pharmaceutical<\/span><span class=\"s8\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">a biotech<\/span><span class=\"s8\">company focus<\/span><span class=\"s8\">ed<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">on the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">clinical development of cancer<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">therapeutics <\/span><span class=\"s8\">targeting the<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">mitochondrial <\/span><span class=\"s8\">stress response <\/span><span class=\"s8\">pathway and target<\/span><span class=\"s8\">s<\/span><span class=\"s8\">. \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s8\">He <\/span><span class=\"s8\">remains an<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> active<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> advisor and <\/span><span class=\"s8\">member of the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">board of director<\/span><span class=\"s8\">s<\/span><span class=\"s8\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s8\">In past roles, <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Mi<\/span><span class=\"s8\">ke<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">was<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">the Senior Vice President for <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Drug Discovery &amp; Development at<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">Curio and<\/span><span class=\"s8\">f<\/span><span class=\"s8\">ounding<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">CEO <\/span><span class=\"s8\">for<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">David H. Murdock Research Institute at the <\/span><span class=\"s8\">North Carolina Research Campus<\/span><span class=\"s8\">, a public-private partnership to accelerate bench to market activities in life sciences<\/span><span class=\"s8\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s9\"><span class=\"s8\">Mike <\/span><span class=\"s8\">also <\/span><span class=\"s8\">has <\/span><span class=\"s8\">over<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> 20<\/span><span class=\"s8\"> years in <\/span><span class=\"s8\">senior <\/span><span class=\"s8\">executive <\/span><span class=\"s8\">roles in the global pharmaceutical industry including<\/span><span class=\"s8\">Vice President<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">and <\/span><span class=\"s8\">head of <\/span><span class=\"s8\">global <\/span><span class=\"s8\">drug discovery divisions <\/span><span class=\"s8\">for<\/span> <span class=\"s8\">both <\/span><span class=\"s8\">Merck and GSK. \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s10\">A<\/span><span class=\"s10\">t GSK<\/span><span class=\"s10\">, he led<\/span> <span class=\"s10\">multiple<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> discovery teams<\/span> <span class=\"s10\">that resulted in the<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> successful<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> launch of <\/span><span class=\"s10\">4<\/span> <span class=\"s10\">n<\/span><span class=\"s10\">ovel<\/span> <span class=\"s10\">therapeutics in oncology and metabolic disease<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> as well as<\/span> <span class=\"s10\">initiating the<\/span> <span class=\"s10\">pharmaceutical<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> industry<\/span><span class=\"s10\">\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s10\">initial<\/span> <span class=\"s10\">efforts i<\/span><span class=\"s10\">n <\/span><span class=\"s10\">precision<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> medicine
