North Carolina State University will close for winter break Dec. 22-Jan. 1.<\/p>\n

NC State, in accordance with the University of North Carolina system, observes the same total number of holidays as those provided to other state agencies. The state authorizes 12 holidays each year, three of which must fall at Christmas.<\/p>\n

NC State employees must use annual leave, bonus leave, special bonus leave or comp time for Dec. 22. The university will provide paid holiday leave for the remainder of winter break according to the institution’s official holidays and closings calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Employees are reminded to follow the Holiday Energy Savings Initiative<\/a> to lower building temperatures and utility costs in unoccupied campus buildings during the break.<\/p>\n

Ways To Save<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Here are steps you can take to help maximize energy savings over the winter holiday.<\/p>\n

  1. Save and secure.<\/strong>\u00a0Shut exterior windows and doors to boost security and energy efficiency.<\/li>\n
  2. Hit the switch.<\/strong>\u00a0Turn off overhead and task lighting before leaving your office, residence hall or lab.<\/li>\n
  3. Pull the plug.<\/strong>\u00a0Turn off nonessential electronics such as coffee makers, toasters, radios, fans, printers, scanners and other small appliances. Consider also powering down your computer and unplugging desk-side devices or chargers.<\/li>\n
  4. Clear the fridge.<\/strong>\u00a0If you don\u2019t want to return to a smelly break room refrigerator in January, consider cleaning before you leave for winter holiday. Empty refrigerators can be defrosted and left unplugged for energy savings (be sure to leave the door open).<\/li>\n
  5. Shut the sash.<\/strong>\u00a0Lab users should close all fume hood sashes and power down non-essential lab equipment. Because labs use more energy than any other type of campus building, small efforts here can make a big difference in energy costs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
