This grant positions North Carolina as a global leader for education, research and innovation in the plant sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is a partnership of NC State and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Its centerpiece is the $160.2 million Plant Sciences Research Complex \u2014 an interdisciplinary center to be built on <a href=\"https:\/\/centennial.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centennial Campus<\/a> that will house academic, government and industry experts working together to solve some of agriculture\u2019s most pressing challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The Golden LEAF grant is the <strong>largest single investment ever made in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College of Agriculture and Life Sciences<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 and among the largest in the university\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<div class=\"videoWrapper\">\n<div class=\"videoContainer\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"N.C. Our farmers recognize the importance of innovation to the future of agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"pullquote\"><span class=\"quote\">\u201cThis will position our college and our state among the premier plant science programs in the world.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"attribution\">\u2014 Dean Richard Linton<\/span><\/aside>\n<p>With the Golden LEAF&#8217;s latest grant, more than $9 million additionally contributed to the project by 42 agricultural groups across the state and $85 million approved by voters through the <a href=\"https:\/\/connectnc.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connect NC Bond<\/a>, the project can now move forward.<\/p>\n<p>Gerlach called Golden LEAF\u2019s latest grant \u201can investment in North Carolina agriculture that will help improve crop yields, introduce new crop and plant varieties, and reduce feed costs for animal agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore important,\u201d he said, \u201cit gives rural North Carolina a competitive market advantage in feeding, fueling and clothing a growing global population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Golden LEAF\u2019s investment means NC State has now secured $144.2 million of the $160.2 million needed for the complex \u2014 and the university is on track to complete construction of the world-class plant research facilities by 2021.<\/p>\n<p>For College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Richard Linton, this investment \u2014 and the wide-ranging support the Plant Sciences Initiative has received \u2014 is a strong endorsement of NC State\u2019s agricultural research and extension, which already has an annual economic impact of more than $1 billion in rural North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur college helps rural N.C. farmers grow more than 90 different commodities across varying climates and soil types, making North Carolina the third most agriculturally diverse state in the nation,\u201d said Linton. \u201cAs we start building out the Plant Sciences Initiative, this will further position our college and our state among the premier plant science programs in the world \u2014 establishing us as <strong>a powerhouse for agricultural innovation and education<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linton shared that most importantly \u201cwith this grant we have the green light to move forward.
