It&#8217;s been five weeks so far \u2013 hard to believe I&#8217;m almost halfway done with my stay here in Peru.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_8883336495399339945gmail-p1\"><span class=\"m_8883336495399339945gmail-s1\">Last week, I worked in a combination of\u00a0<i>sample preparation<\/i>\u00a0and<i>\u00a0rapid analysis<\/i>\u00a0with my team. The \u201csample preparation\u201d part involved a lot of washing potatoes, which is not the most glamorous part of research, but it\u2019s really important, actually: since we\u2019re going to analyze these potato samples for iron and zinc content, we want to ensure that\u00a0 they aren\u2019t contaminated with the iron and zinc in soil. Plus, washing potatoes is a lot more interesting with the radio playing\u00a0<\/span><i>Latin Pop,<\/i>\u00a0<i>salsa,\u00a0<\/i>or one of the many traditional\u00a0regional genres in Peru. Although by now I&#8217;ve become much more comfortable with working mainly in Spanish, picking out the words in the fast-paced salsas is quite a bit harder for me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_8883336495399339945gmail-p1\">The \u201crapid analysis\u201d part that I\u2019ve been learning is a lot more obviously\u00a0<i>sciencey<\/i>: CIP researcher Eduardo Porras and I (in the two lab pictures below) used a machine called XRF (X-ray fluorescence) that we can use to accurately and quickly approximate the iron and zinc content in potatoes.
