{"id":13938,"date":"2020-08-28T16:42:04","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T20:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science-new\/people\/lgw\/"},"modified":"2021-07-02T12:00:51","modified_gmt":"2021-07-02T16:00:51","slug":"lgw","status":"publish","type":"person","link":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/people\/lgw\/","title":{"rendered":"George Wilson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"\">Dr. Lorenzo George Wilson joined the Horticultural Science faculty at North Carolina State University in March 1975 &#8211; with statewide Extension responsibilities for Sweetpotato and Potato programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">A native of Niagara County, NY, George earned his B.S. in Pomology\/Agricultural Economics at Cornell University, his M.S. in Horticulture at Washington State University, and his Ph.D. in Postharvest Horticulture at Michigan State University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Prior to coming to NC&#160;State, Dr. Wilson worked for nine years as Research Postharvest Physiologist and Technology Transfer Specialist (bananas and other tropical fruits) for the Division of Tropical Research of United Fruit Company (Chiquita International, LLP) in La Lima, Cortes, Honduras &#8211; plus other banana divisions in Middle America &#8211; where he learned Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 1982 Dean Edward Legates appointed Wilson to a one-year assignment as Deputy Chief of Party for Extension for the NC&#160;State University U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Research, Extension, and Education (REE) Project in Lima, Peru.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 1983 he resumed his previous Horticultural Science responsibilities, plus he established the statewide Postharvest Physiology\/Technology Extension program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 1990 Wilson was selected as the first ASHS\/AAAS (American Society for Horticultural Science \/ American Association for the Advancement of Science) Congressional Science Fellow &#8211; where he worked at the heart of the legislative process as Senior Science Advisor\/Legislative Assistant for agricultural and environmental issues in the office of North Carolina Senator Terry Sanford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 1991 Dean Durward Bateman reassigned Dr. Wilson to Peru for two years as Chief of Party of the NC&#160;State USAID Applied Technology Transformation (ATT) project &#8211; and transferred his position to the Office of International Programs (OIP) of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 1992, due to unrest related to terrorism, the U.S. Embassy in Peru terminated most contract programs including our USAID ATT project and our more than 40 year-long NC&#160;State \u2018Mision Carolina\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Because there was no available position in the CALS OIP at that time \u2026..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 1993, Dean Bateman encouraged Dr. Wilson to accept a seven-month assignment as a team leader in Bulgaria with the USDA\/FAS (Foreign Agricultural Service) Bulgarian American Extension Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">By 1994, because the OIP staffing situation had not changed, Wilson was reassigned to the Horticultural Science Department with new extension responsibilities including Postharvest Physiology and Technology and Greenhouse Vegetables &#8211; plus engagement as the departmental representative for the establishment of the Organic Unit of the new NC&#160;State, NC A&amp;T State Univ., NCDA&amp;CS <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cefs.ncsu.edu\/\"><span style=\"\">Center for Environmental Farming Systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> (CEFS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 1997 Dean Bateman appointed Wilson as Assistant Dean for International Programs for CALS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 2002 NC&#160;State Provost Stuart Cooper appointed Dr. Wilson as Vice Provost for University International Affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 2006 Wilson was selected as Senior Advisor for University Relations and Agricultural Research, Training and Outreach<\/span> <span style=\"\">for the Office of Agriculture of USAID\/Washington &#8211; through a two-year Intergovernmental Personnel Agreement (IPA) between NC&#160;State and USAID. During this time one of Wilson\u2019s responsibilities was being engaged as the only non-career Foreign Service Officer on the team that drafted the RFP (Request for Proposals) for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/horticulture.ucdavis.edu\/\"><span style=\"\">USAID Horticulture Collaborative Research Support Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> (CRSP) \u2026 which eventually became the <a href=\"https:\/\/horticulture.ucdavis.edu\/\">Feed The Future Horticulture Innovation Lab<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 2008, Dr. Wilson returned to the Horticultural Science Department &#8211; with responsibilities which included teaching graduate and undergraduate Postharvest Physiology, HS 462\/562, both in the classroom and by distance learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 2009 he was appointed to represent NC&#160;State on the Program Council of the <\/span><span style=\"\">USAID Horticulture <\/span><span style=\"\">CRSP, then elected to its International Advisory Board (IAB) &#8211; serving as its initial chair during 2010-2012 \u2026 and continued service on the IAB of the Horticulture Innovation Lab until its termination in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">In 2012 Wilson enrolled in the NC&#160;State phased retirement program and retired in 2015.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Since 2015 Wilson has been actively engaged in the teaching, mentoring, and program development at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zamorano.edu\/en\/\">Panamerican School of Agriculture\/Zamorano University<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\">\u00a0near Tegucigalpa, Honduras<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">A member of ASHS since 1962, Dr. Wilson was elected Fellow of the Society in 1992, was elected President in 2003, its Centennial year, was Chair of the Board of Directors in 2004, and received the Outstanding International Horticulturist award in 2008.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Dr. Wilson\u2019s traditional and non-traditional contributions to North Carolina State University have been diverse &#8211; while adding value to the mission of one of the leading Horticultural Science Departments in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Since 1979 George and his family have been members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbbc.org\/\">Hayes Barton Baptist Church<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"\">serving on its diaconate and in its chancel choir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Since 1998 George has been a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westraleighrotary.org\/\">Rotary Club of West Raleigh<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\">\u00a0serving as its president during 2018-2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">George was married to Claudia (Cochrane) Wilson for 52 \u00bd years &#8211; they have three children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2774,"featured_media":14206,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"source":"","ncst_custom_author":"","ncst_show_custom_author":false,"ncst_dynamicHeaderBlockName":"","ncst_dynamicHeaderData":"","ncst_content_audit_freq":"","ncst_content_audit_date":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"group":[324],"person_tag":[],"class_list":["post-13938","person","type-person","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","group-emeriti"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/person\/13938","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/person"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/person"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2774"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/person\/13938\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":14207,"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/person\/13938\/revisions\/14207"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/14206"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=13938"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"group","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/group?post=13938"},{"taxonomy":"person_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/horticultural-science\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/person_tag?post=13938"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
