Dr. Tom Kon leads an applied pomology program and specializes in reproductive and vegetative growth management of apple. Tom has a multi-state appointment and serves the apple industries of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. This is a formal agreement with NC State University, Clemson University, and the University of Georgia. He is based at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River, NC.
His integrated research and extension program is aligned with the needs of the southeastern apple industry and is focused on three critical areas. Specifically, the development of: 1) novel apple crop load management programs, products, and decision-making aids, 2) technologies to manage vegetative growth throughout the life of the orchard, especially during orchard establishment, and 3) technologies to maximize fruit quality and storage potential. Dr. Kon will provide an overview of his program, key impacts, and future directions.
