Abstract:
“Forest Farming” is very popular right now and many entities, including federal agencies, universities, and organizations are encouraging forest landowners to incorporate this aspect of agroforestry into their forest management plans. There are many non-timber forest products that can be cultivated under the forest canopy, but the current emphasis, in response to high market demands, is on medicinal herbs. Growing and collecting native medicinal plants from the woods is not a new concept. In this seminar, we will cover the history of wild-harvesting herbs in the Appalachians, the move towards cultivation, our research to support “conservation through cultivation”, and what the future might hold for this industry.
