FreeImproving Stevia rebaudiana Breeding at NC State University
Stevia rebaudiana is a new emerging crop from South America that has
gained interest from US growers in the last few years. The North
Carolina State University Stevia breeding program was started in 2014
by evaluating many garden and commercial seed sources and adapting
these diverse germplasm to North Carolina environments. We are
conducting field trails with our Stevia accessions to measure traits
such as plant growth, flowering, lodging and plant diseases. We have
found many challenges and opportunities for future research in Stevia
breeding in the last four field seasons.
We will be investigating ways to improve breeding research and
production by examining poor seed germination and longevity, seed
infertility and cytogenetic studies, shortening the breeding cycle,
disease screening trials, and optimizing experiment size, plot size,
and plant/plot size. We are also working to repurpose Tobacco
equipment, tools, and supplies for former Tobacco producers to
transition into growing Stevia. We have a lot to accomplish to make
Stevia a viable crop for NC but fortunately we have a dedicated team
of university researchers, business leaders, and willing growers to
help push expansion of the Stevia industry in the Southeastern US.
Emily Silverman will present proposed research projects on improving
Stevia breeding for field research and production.
