Join us for this late afternoon to early evening tour of the research we are doing on hops and industrial hemp (for cannabinoids). We will visit the hop variety trial which is seven years old now. This has been a challenging year with strange spring temperatures and that 20+ inches of rain in May, so you will see diseases, insects, and production issues that you might not have seen before. We will show you the hops harvester and if any bines are ready for harvest, we will run them through it. We will have posters showing some of the breeding research we have going on in other locations. After visiting the hops we will walk down to our industrial hemp studies where we are looking at growing “CBD” hemp with different mulches and in a no-till system. We also have a variety trial. We will have posters to show some of the grain and fiber research and a “CBD” topping study we have in other locations.

This is an outside event and will take place regardless of the weather. So please come dressed appropriately (hat, sunscreen, bug spray, field shoes, umbrella, etc). We will walk from the parking area to the hop yard, then down a hill to the industrial hemp field, then back to the parking area. We will have some vehicles available to transport people who cannot make the walk. If the weather is bad, we will move into an equipment building or other covered area.

These projects are funded by the USDA Capacity Building Grant through Virginia State University, a USDA Specialty Crops Block Grant administered by NCDA&CS, and a NC Agricultural Foundation grant. The hop harvester is on loan from HopsHarvester.

This research is maintained by Luping Qu, Leonora Stefanile, Gwen Casebeer, Rob Anderson, and the research station staff. I would like to express my appreciation to all of them!

Here is a “rough” agenda. It will be flexible to meet the interests of the group in attendance:

4:30-5:00         Registration

5:00-5:15         Welcome by Jeanine Davis and Jeff Chandler

5:15-6:15         Overview of growing hops in the Southeast, our research, the hops breeding project, and demonstration of the hops harvester by Jeanine Davis and Luping Qu

6:15-6:30         Walk down the hill to the industrial hemp plots

6:30-7:30         Overview of growing industrial hemp in North Carolina, our research, and what we have going on in other locations by Jeanine Davis, Margaret Bloomquist and Leonora Stefanile

7:30-8:00         Q&A and general discussion time
DIRECTIONS

The Google Map directions will bring you to the research station, but you will need to turn onto Butler Farm Road which is opposite from the research station entrance. We will  have signs there for you. It is a gravel road. (This is for the research station where the greenhouses and fields are, NOT the big office/lab/auditorium building on the top of the hill).
