“All About Weeds: ID, Prevention, and Management”

Whether you have a flower bed, tomato patch, or a full blown home landscape, contending with weeds can be the bane of every gardener. This talk will feature the most common garden weeds, and discuss the best prevention and management strategies we can use in our home gardens. Weeds don’t have to rule our Southern gardens, or our lives!

“Pest and Beneficial Insects in Your Garden”
Steven Frank, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Entomology, NC State University

In this presentation, we will learn some common groups of pest insects and the beneficials that eat them. We will also consider ways to reduce pest outbreaks by putting plants in locations where they can thrive. Finally, we will discuss ways to encourage beneficial insects in your garden to help reduce pests and just because they are fun to watch.

“Catastrophic or Cosmetic?: Plant Diseases in the Southern Garden”
Michael Munster, Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, NC State University

An overview of infectious diseases that occur on ornamental plant species in central North Carolina landscapes. We’ll explore the pathogens that cause plant disease, their importance, dispersal, and survival. We’ll see examples of problems you can self-diagnose, plus we’ll talk about where to turn when you don’t have a clue.

About the Speakers

Steven Frank, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of Entomology, NC State University

Frank is a professor and Extension specialist focused on pests of trees and other landscape plants. He studies why urban plants have more pests than plants in natural areas and how to rectify this by encouraging beneficial insects and good planting practices.

Bryce Lane
Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Emeritus and Lecturer Emeritus, Department of Horticultural Science, NC State University

Bryce retired from NC State in January 2014, and is now spending more time with his family, pursuing the next chapter in his public speaking career, and teaching part time at NC State and the JC Raulston Arboretum. After earning his B.S. in plant science from the University of Massachusetts in 1979 and an M.S. in horticulture from The Ohio State University in 1981, he came to the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University as a lecturer, teaching in both the two-year and four-year programs—eventually becoming the department’s undergraduate coordinator. He served as interim director of the JC Raulston Arboretum after J. C. Raulston’s death in 1996 and from July through November 2014. He is an avid gardener who has gardened in the same spot for more than 30 years!

After earning his B.S. in plant science from the University of Massachusetts in 1979 and an M.S. in horticulture from The Ohio State University in 1981, he came to the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University as a lecturer, teaching in both the two-year and four-year programs.

Michael Munster
Michael Munster, Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, NC State University

Since February 2009, Mike Munster has been responsible for diagnosing diseases on ornamentals for commercial clients such as nurseries and greenhouses. He holds a B.S. degree in Agronomy from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. in Plant Pathology from North Carolina State University. Mike is also a regular presenter on the online “Plants, Pests, and Pathogens” series for Master Gardener Volunteers.
