Bring Food Science to Your Classroom

If you’re a middle or high school teacher, consider teaching your students the importance of food science and safety!

Come to Raleigh this summer and get hands-on professional development for facilitating food science lessons in your classroom. Upon completion of this workshop, you will be certified to teach the CASE Food Science and Safety course. You will receive the curriculum with lesson plans, lab activities, presentations, quizzes, answer keys, assessment rubrics and more.

This course is intended for middle and high school teachers of agricultural curriculum and teachers of basic science such as biology and chemistry.

Course Information

Dates

June 21 (5 p.m.) through July 2 (5 p.m.), 2020

Location

Schaub Hall, NC State University, Raleigh, NC

Plan to arrive at NC State by 5 p.m. on June 21st for orientation. At orientation, we will provide teachers with the institute’s itinerary.

Schedule

  • The class starts each day at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. There will be a one-hour lunch break.
  • Participants will have homework to complete each evening.

Travel

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is 20 minutes from the campus. Ride services such as Uber and Lyft are often the best options to travel between the airport and campus.

Lodging

Participants will stay on campus at the Wolf Village Apartments in four-room, four-person suite-style rooms. Each suite has a small kitchenette with refrigerators. Visit the Wolf Village website to learn more about the amenities. The apartment complex is a 10-minute walk from Schaub Hall.

Meals

We will provide pre-paid debit cards to give you flexibility in choosing dining options. There are many restaurants and grocery store options on and near campus.

Weekend Off (June 27-28)

Participants will have the weekend to explore beautiful North Carolina. Raleigh is located in the Triangle with lots to see in the surrounding areas, including nearby Durham and Chapel Hill. The city is a two-hour drive from the Carolina coast and its gorgeous beaches, and four hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Each participant will have their room at NC State University reserved for the duration of the institute. All weekend activities (including meals) will be the responsibility of participants.

  • Brooklyn Bush, Tillamook High School, Tillamook, Oregon. Brooklyn has five years of teaching experience and three years of experience with CASE Food Science and Safety.
  • Jen Phelps, Carthage Central School, rural New York. Jen has 26 years’ teaching experience.

$2,800*, including accommodations and meals
