{"id":1936,"date":"2017-03-19T21:28:54","date_gmt":"2017-03-20T01:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/crop-and-soil-dev-site\/people\/mcvann\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T11:50:34","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T15:50:34","slug":"mcvann","status":"publish","type":"person","link":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/crop-and-soil-sciences\/people\/mcvann\/","title":{"rendered":"Matthew Vann"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A native of Lafayette County, Florida (which is located in the historic Florida Tobacco Belt), Dr. Vann greatly understands the value of tobacco to the family farm.\u00a0 Growing up he enjoyed working on his family\u2019s Century Pioneer Farm, and spent many summers working the neighboring tobacco and watermelon fields in his community.\u00a0 After high school, he enrolled at the University of Florida \u2013 graduating in 2009 with a degree in Environmental Management in Agriculture and Natural Resources and a double minor in Plant Science and Soil Science.\u00a0 He completed his M.S. (2011) and Ph.D. (2015) in the Crop and Soil Sciences Department at North Carolina State University where his research and education focuses were to the agronomic management of flue-cured tobacco.\u00a0 In 2015, Dr. Vann was appointed to the Dr. William K. Collins Tobacco Agronomist Position in Research, Teaching, and Extension Endowment.\u00a0 His responsibilities include teaching tobacco production courses in both the two (CS 116) and four year (CS 216) programs at NC&#160;State University, advising M.S. and Ph.D. level graduate students, supporting the efforts of Cooperative Extension Agents with tobacco responsibilities, directing Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) training for North Carolina tobacco farmers, and providing timely Extension information to allied industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vann serves as a primary author of bi-weekly tobacco production updates entitled \u201cFrom the Field-Agronomy Notes\u201d, which are available during the production season through the <a href=\"https:\/\/tobacco.ces.ncsu.edu\/\">NC&#160;State Tobacco Portal<\/a>.\u00a0 He is a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, Soil Science Society of American, American Society for Horticultural Sciences, and the Weed Science Society of North Carolina.\u00a0 In addition, he serves an author or co-author of five chapters of the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/content.ces.ncsu.edu\/flue-cured-tobacco-information\">NC&#160;State Flue-Cured Tobacco Production Guide<\/a>, two chapters of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tobacco.ces.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2019-2020-Burley-and-Dark-Tobacco-Production-Guide.pdf?fwd=no\">Burley and Dark Tobacco Production Guide<\/a>, and three tables in the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/content.ces.ncsu.edu\/north-carolina-agricultural-chemicals-manual\">North Carolina Agricultural Chemicals Manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He conducts applied research in areas related to variety evaluation, plant nutrition, crop physiology, greenhouse production, weed management, sucker control, organic tobacco production, and pesticide residue quantification.\u00a0 Dr. Vann utilizes research facilities located in Whiteville (Border Belt Tobacco Research Station), Kinston (Cunningham Research Station), Rocky Mount (Upper Coastal Plain Research Station), Oxford (Oxford Tobacco Research Station), Clayton (Central Crops Research Station), Laurel Springs (Upper Mountain Research Station), and Waynesville (Mountain Research Station).\u00a0 His research efforts are focused on flue-cured, burley, and cigar wrapper tobacco production.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vann also participates in the Cooperative Centre for Scientific Research Relative to Tobacco (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coresta.org\/\">CORESTA<\/a>), which is based in Paris, France.\u00a0 To date he has authored or co-authored more than 30 conference abstracts and currently serves as the Secretary to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coresta.org\/groups\/agrochemical-residue-field-trials\">Agrochemical Residue Field Trial Task Force<\/a>.\u00a0 The efforts of the task force serve to generate the data necessary for the establishment of Guidance Residue Limits as they pertain to Crop Protection Agent residues detected in\/on cured leaf.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Current Graduate Students:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Patrick Maxwell (Ph.D., committee co-chair)<\/p>\n<p>-Raymond Rodriguez (Ph.D., committee member)<\/p>\n<p>-James Martin (M.S., committee member)<\/p>\n<p>-Maggie Short (M.S., committee chair)<\/p>\n<p>-Dwayne Dabbs (Master of Crop Science, committee chair)<\/p>\n<p>-Collin Blalock (Master of Crop Science, committee chair)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Former Graduate Students:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Nicholas J.
