Inclusive Diversity in Soil Science – Seminar and Conversation 3:30 – 5:00

Dr. Asmeret Asefaw Berhe , Professor of Soil Biogeochemistry,

Department of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of California, Merced.

ABSTRACT
Soil Science, like other Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) scholarly communities continues to lack diversity. Because demographics of groups and institutions provide a window into the culture, climate, equity, and inclusion of minoritized scholars, I will discuss the data on lack of diversity and how lack of diversity continues to affect our science and the scientific community, and its implications for the welfare of the global population. I will discuss the how we can improve the culture and climate in academic institutions by building antiracist labs that promote beliefs, actions, or policies that people of different races and ethnicities are equal.

Dr. Berhe is Professor of Soil Biogeochemistry and Falasco Chair in Earth Sciences at the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of California, Merced. Her research program focuses on the biogeochemical cycling of essential elements in the soil system, global change science, nano-geochemistry, and the political ecology of land degradation and ownership. She is the recipient of several awards and honors, including Fellow and Joanne Simpson Medal recipient from the American Geophysical Union; Fellow and Bromery Award recipient from the Geological Society of America; the National Science Foundation’s CAREER award, and is a member of the inaugural class of the US National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine’s New Voices in Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
